Time Lapse Aerial Photographs of Venice Salt Dome

Salt domes in Louisiana and Texas are important sites for oil and gas extraction. They also serve as storage facilities for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The Venice Salt Dome (aka “The Wagon Wheel”) is located in Southeast Louisiana, in Plaquemines Parish. Below is a time lapse showing how the salt dome evolved from the 1940s to the present. The land loss illustrated in the photographs is the result of encroachment of the Gulf of Mexico.
